Director’s Notes
If there is one thing that we need after the last two years, it is to laugh! And we have laughed while preparing The 39 Steps for you. It has been a joy to return to rehearsals with this show, cast and team. I think the hiatus of the ‘Great Pause’ created a vacuum for all the creative energy that we were so used to using and I have reaped the benefit of that pent up energy. I hope that all of you do so as well.
The play itself is such a fun show, and it has also been a nostalgic journey for me. Working on it took me back to my University days in the late 80s and early 90s when my sister and I would venture to the Princess Theatre to catch the “old” movies. We watched Hitchcock films like Psycho, Vertigo and Rear Window, and romantic comedies like Bringing up Baby and It Happened One Night. I recall one morning, after seeing The Birds the previous night, walking past Garneau school and having a minor panic attack seeing a huge flock of seagulls on the grass in the playground. That’s what Hitchcock did. I loved those films: the style of the language; the fabulous costumes; the melodrama of the music; and the ridiculous situations. I hope we’ve managed to bring some of those elements to the stage for you to enjoy!
I would like to thank the fabulous team that supported me to build this ‘little’ show. It’s not really that little. Despite being written for only 4 actors, there are a multitude of characters who needed costumes, a plethora of settings that required sets, and a staggering number of sound and light cues! Many thanks to all my designers and their amazing departments who really rose to the occasion… I think they were all very happy to be back!

The 39 Steps, a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who loves the magic of theatre! This two-time Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning treat is packed with nonstop laughs, over 150 zany characters (played by a ridiculously talented cast of six), an onstage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers, and some good old-fashioned romance!
Setting
---
1935, Various locations in London and Scotland
Run Time
---
Running time 2 hours and 20 minutes, including a 15 minute intermission
Audience Advisories
---
Please be advised that this production includes fog, gunshots, explosions, whistles, sheep, the sound of bagpipes, and strobe light effects. There is also the presentation of violence but in a silly and ridiculous manner. The bad guys are bad, and the good guys are good – all of them are rather silly.

A Brief History of Walterdale Theatre and Building
Walterdale is one of the longest running community theatres in Canada.
Walterdale Theatre Associates traces its beginnings to Theatre Associates, who produced their first plays (Lady Audley’s Secret and Out of the Frying Pan) in August 1958, playing in the Jubilee Auditorium social room. Before finding its home in the current Fire Hall, there have been two other Walterdale Theatres. The first was an old school on the Walterdale flats (Kinsmen Fieldhouse area), hence our name. The second was a former service men’s club house, which was later demolished for Kingsway Garden Mall.
Our current building was built in 1910 and was Strathcona Fire Hall #1. In 1912 it was re-numbered Edmonton #6 when the City of Strathcona amalgamated with the City of Edmonton. The bell tower houses the Strathcona “Town Bell”. It is topped by an octagonal belfry, covered by an octagonal roof. The tower was used to dry hoses (by hanging them up) after use. The stable (now set-building workshop) was designed to house nine horses.
The building ceased to be a working Fire Hall in 1954 and was used to store furniture. In 1974 Walterdale Theatre Associates took over the building and lovingly restored it, and converted the inside to a 145-seat theatre. The first play produced in this theatre was What the Butler Saw by Joe Orton, which opened November 12, 1974.
Major renovations were again carried out in 1993 (raising the roof and tying the building together with new beams) and in 2011 (new main floor washrooms, renewing the bricks and other major outside work).
Walterdale continues to keep our building updated and efficient, and have replaced the lighting instruments with LED lights, and the aging second floor furnaces with new high-efficiency units.
