I am thrilled to be sharing the story of Harvey with you, as it has been one of my favourites for decades. In a story with a variety of complex relationships, Harvey asks you to figure out just which of yours are important to you. No really, he’ll take you for a drink at Charlie’s to engage in conversation, and then leave you thoughtful, a little more joyful…..and perhaps with the bill.

A traumatic event can alter how you look at the world. And when Elwood and Veta’s mother passes away, it affects them both very differently. The difference for Elwood is considered more dramatic and because of that, everyone takes notice and is quick to judge. The story of Harvey opens up those judgments for conversation, asking just who has the right to say that how we handle an event is wrong? While it doesn’t tell you what to think, I have always respected how this story allows each character to have an opinion and express why they feel said way. You get to leave the story making that decision for yourself – what or who is Harvey and what purpose does he serve?

Aside from diving into mental health, family dynamics and workplace biases, Harvey does all of this with love. The light heartedness of how Mary Chase delivers her messages has always sat with me. The playwright is smart with the writing, sharing big topics with light, laughter and love. We could all use more of all three of those these days.

Enjoy the world we have created. Open up your own conversations. Laugh when things are silly. And perhaps check your hats for two perforated holes.

~ Rebecca

Deb Gunning – Co-Costume Designer

Inspired by my Mum, a talented dressmaker, I discovered my passion for garment making by age 7 hand sewing outfits for my Barbies. He has been in front and behind the stage for ELOPE Musical Theatre, Grande Prairie Live Theatre, 2 One-Way Tickets to Broadway, and Trinity Players. This is his second production with Walterdale Theatre. If anything strange happens to you on the way home, blame it on the seven foot rabbit!

Debbie Tyson – Props Mentor

Debbie Caseburg Tyson explores her world through colour, texture, print and stitch. She loves that every show brings opportunities to explore new materials, methods and constructions.

WALTERDALE THEATRE ASSOCIATES
Is a Canadian Registered Charity, and will provide you with an income tax receipt for any donation over $20.00 you wish to make.Thank you to everyone who supports our theatre!

Walterdale is one of the longest running community theatres in Canada.

Walterdale Theatre Associates traces its beginnings to Theatre Associates, who produced their first plays (Lady Audley’s Secret and Out of the Frying Pan) in August 1958, playing in the Jubilee Auditorium social room. Before finding its home in the current Fire Hall, there have been two other Walterdale Theatres. The first was an old school on the Walterdale flats (Kinsmen Fieldhouse area), hence our name. The second was a former service men’s club house, which was later demolished for Kingsway Garden Mall.

Our current building was built in 1910 and was Strathcona Fire Hall #1. In 1912 it was re-numbered Edmonton #6 when the City of Strathcona amalgamated with the City of Edmonton. The bell tower houses the Strathcona “Town Bell”. It is topped by an octagonal belfry, covered by an octagonal roof. The tower was used to dry hoses (by hanging them up) after use. The stable (now set-building workshop) was designed to house nine horses.

The building ceased to be a working Fire Hall in 1954 and was used to store furniture. In 1974 Walterdale Theatre Associates took over the building and lovingly restored it, and converted the inside to a 145-seat theatre. The first play produced in this theatre was What the Butler Saw by Joe Orton, which opened November 12, 1974.

Major renovations were again carried out in 1993 (raising the roof and tying the building together with new beams) and in 2011 (new main floor washrooms, renewing the bricks and other major outside work).

Walterdale continues to keep our building updated and efficient, and have replaced the lighting instruments with LED lights, and the aging second floor furnaces with new high-efficiency units.
