Director’s Notes
Welcome to The Tamer Tamed!
I am thrilled to bring John Fletcher’s Jacobean comedy to Walterdale Theatre to kick off Season 68: [Re]Write Your Story. The story of how I came across this play stretches back 15 years, in my final year of my BA (Hons) Drama Degree at the U of A. I wanted to do something Shakespearean for my Drama 483 directing final, and while doing some searching came across The Woman’s Prize or The Tamer Tamed. I was instantly drawn to what appeared to be a sequel to William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, where Petruchio’s new wife, Maria, flips the script and tames Shakespeare’s original tamer.
The most amazing part? This sequel was written within a couple decades of Shakespeare’s play! To me it seemed completely ahead of its time, making it my kind of show, and I stitched together a number of scenes for my directing final. Since then, The Tamer Tamed has been lingering in the back of my mind, waiting for the right time to dive into it again. This is that time. I hope you enjoy this story of reclaiming agency and fighting for equality in relationships, and relish in the modern sensibility of this period play.

| The Jacobean sequel to William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, The Tamer Tamed begins with Maria’s marriage to Petruchio, after the death of his first wife, Kate. Cheered on by her cousin, Byancha, and others, Maria is determined to “tame the tamer,” despite his overwhelming reputation. What ensues is a hilarious and absurd battle of the sexes that strives to bring partners in marriage to a more equal state, a tale far ahead of its time. |

Female Chorus/Maid 2 – Audrey Boschman

This is Audrey’s first show with Walterdale, and she is very excited to be a part of this incredible cast of entertainers. Rowland – Darek Burdziuk

In his Walterdale Theatre debut, Darek is thrilled to show you the emotional rollercoaster that his character experiences. He owes everything to his wife for her love and support while he performs for you. He would like to thank the cast & crew for the new friendships made in his 3rd play!
Male Chorus/Watch 1- Benny Chen

Much as Chinese influence and trade migrated west on the Silk Road to Italy by the Jacobean era, Benny Chen migrated west from his birthplace of Montreal to his childhood home of Saskatoon to hanging up his hat in Edmonton. Benny has previously performed with Firefly Circus, Edmonton School of Ballet, and Grindstone Theatre.
Male Chorus/Watch 2/Servant – Stephan Desjarlais

Stephan is a queer and Indigenous theatre artist born and raised in small-town Alberta. He is very pleased to be making his return to the Walterdale, his previous credit being a sound operator on 2023’s Harvey. While not acting, he enjoys sitting with a good book or a scary movie.
Livia & Fight/Intimacy Captain – Ren Elliott

Ren is so excited to be portraying Livia in this production! As a recent graduate of MacEwan’s Music Theatre Performance program, this will be her first show as a newly established artist! Some notable credits include Viola de Lesseps – Shakespeare In Love (Walterdale Theatre), and Helen/Ensemble/Swing – Carrie (MacEwan).
Moroso – John Gaunce

John is pleased to be on the Walterdale stage again. He has been playing roles in shows for 40 years and hopes to make it another 40. “If you want to be a good saddler, saddle the worst horse; for if you can tame one, you can tame all.” ~ Socrates
Petronius – Gary Goulden

Gary is a native Edmontonian. The business end of life finds him teaching English to newcomers. The fun side of life finds him pedalling, paddling, enjoying his garden, or cheering his beloved Swansea Football Club. He was last seen at the Walterdale in the 2023 production, Harvey.
Pedro – Julian Hempel

As Julian’s first show with Walterdale, he has had a blast learning the ins and outs of this community! Coming from high school shows like The Importance of Being Earnest and Pillow Talk, he’s created lots of fun memories and relations with the people that surround him.
Petruchio – Kris Loranger

Kris is excited to be back at the Walterdale Theatre! Recent roles include Tristen in The Effect (EB Productions), Elyot in Private Lives (EB Productions), and Oscar in The Odd Couple (St. Albert Dinner Theatre). Much love to Kerri, Draya, and Adam for their support and the many joys they bring away from the stage.
Female Chorus/Maid 3 – Belle Newall

Belle Newall is a recent graduate of Strathcona High School, and is now attending MacEwan University for Music Theatre Performance. Previously, she performed as Heather Duke in Heathers the Musical, Ensemble in Hadestown, Chorus in This Girl Laughs…, and directed Where Have All the Lightning Bugs Gone? for SconActs ‘25.
Byancha – Anglia Redding

According to Hall & Oates & Nelly Furtado, Byancha is definitely a man-eater, but Anglia considers herself more of a chocolate-eater (preferably dark). If lost, you can find Anglia in the fantasy section of the nearest bookstore. Previous credits: Waiting for the Parade (Walterdale) and The Ballad of Maria Marten (LDS).
Tranio – Kendrick Sims

With a BA in Drama, Kendrick adores all things theatre and is thrilled to return to Walterdale, following his previous performance as Heisenberg in 2023’s Copenhagen. Excited to be in her first Walterdale production, Sabrina has spent the last four years renewing her love of performing. Recently on stage in Anne of Green Gables, Miracle on 34 St, Shrek (Nuova), Cinderella, Narnia (Festival Players), and choreographer of Beehive, the 60s Musical (SADT), she looks forward to being “merely a player”.
Rachel Whipple – Female Chorus/Maid 1

Rachel is an avid Walterdale member who serves on the board, performs on stage, and helps backstage. She has recently worked on HAGS, Sex Please We’re Sixty, According to the Chorus, and Pair of Guys Lost. We defy you and shall not “discover the happy islands of obedience”!
Country Leader/Female Chorus – Tracy Wyman

Tracy loves live theatre and has acted in and directed a variety of shows over the years. Most recently directing at St Albert Dinner Theatre and here at Walterdale. She is thrilled to step out of the Director’s chair and back on stage to engage in this fun battle of the sexes.
Jaques – Josh Young

Born and raised in Edmonton Josh is a government public servant moonlighting as an actor. There are three rules that Josh lives by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady who’s got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Other than acting, Josh’s prime directive is his constant search of life, liberty, and a deluxe pizza.

Graeme Head – Props Assistant

After years of hiatus, this marks Graeme’s return to prop making. Graeme is happy to be back, and honoured to be working with Walterdale for the first time. An eccentric oddball, Graeme is often “that guy you know” who has whatever obscure thing you are looking for already lying around.

A Brief History of Walterdale Theatre and Building
Walterdale is one of the longest running community theatres in Canada.
Walterdale Theatre Associates traces its beginnings to Theatre Associates, who produced their first plays (Lady Audley’s Secret and Out of the Frying Pan) in August 1958, playing in the Jubilee Auditorium social room. Before finding its home in the current Fire Hall, there have been two other Walterdale Theatres. The first was an old school on the Walterdale flats (Kinsmen Fieldhouse area), hence our name. The second was a former service men’s club house, which was later demolished for Kingsway Garden Mall.
Our current building was built in 1910 and was Strathcona Fire Hall #1. In 1912 it was re-numbered Edmonton #6 when the City of Strathcona amalgamated with the City of Edmonton. The bell tower houses the Strathcona “Town Bell”. It is topped by an octagonal belfry, covered by an octagonal roof. The tower was used to dry hoses (by hanging them up) after use. The stable (now set-building workshop) was designed to house nine horses.
The building ceased to be a working Fire Hall in 1954 and was used to store furniture. In 1974 Walterdale Theatre Associates took over the building and lovingly restored it, and converted the inside to a 145-seat theatre. The first play produced in this theatre was What the Butler Saw by Joe Orton, which opened November 12, 1974.
Major renovations were again carried out in 1993 (raising the roof and tying the building together with new beams) and in 2011 (new main floor washrooms, renewing the bricks and other major outside work).
Walterdale continues to keep our building updated and efficient, and has replaced the lighting instruments with LED lights, and the the aging heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems throughout the building with modern efficient HVAC systems.
